Pottersville was started on March 25, 1799. It was part of the Town of Chester in Warren County. In the early days, most families in Pottersville were farmers. They often raised animals like sheep to get wool for clothing. Later, small factories called carding mills and tanneries were built. These were the first types of manufacturing outside of people's homes. In 1805, roads connecting the Town of Chester were opened. These roads are still in the same places today.
In 1845, the Town of Chester produced a lot of farm goods. They made over 50,000 pounds of butter and almost 12,000 pounds of cheese. They also grew more than 31,000 bushels of potatoes. These numbers show that farming was very important in the 1800s.
Travelers often stayed at the Wells House, a hotel built in 1845. It was known for its great hospitality. The Wells House served fresh fish from Schroon Lake and venison from the nearby forests. Many "Summer Folks" from places like Albany and Glens Falls would visit the hotel.
An old and exciting event in Pottersville was the "Pottersville Fair." It started in 1877. After some problems, the fair was brought back in 1910 by the "Pottersville Fair Association." The 1913 fair was very popular, with about 7,000 people attending! Festivities included a parade of 400 cars, an ox race, music, a dog and pony show, and a contortionist.
