History of Chestertown
This community was started in 1799. Early settlers from New England built mills along the local creeks. These mills used water power to grind grain or saw wood. The very first settlement began around 1790. It was known as Chester Four Corners back then.
The Chestertown Historic District was added to a special list in 1977. This list is called the National Register of Historic Places. It helps protect important historical sites.
