Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Poughkeepsie (pronounced locally as Pow-keeps-ee) is a small, unincorporated community located in Sharp County, Arkansas, in the United States. An unincorporated community is a place where people live, but it doesn't have its own local government like a city or town does. Instead, it's usually governed by the county.

Poughkeepsie is found in the south-central part of Sharp County. It's situated about one mile south of the Strawberry River, which is a beautiful natural feature. The community is also located right on Arkansas Highway 56, making it easy to reach. It's about six miles east of another community called Evening Shade.

How the School District Formed

  • 2004 Merger: Later, on July 1, 2004, the River Valley School District merged again. This time, it combined with the Lynn School District. This final merger formed the Hillcrest School District that exists today, providing education for students in Poughkeepsie and surrounding areas.
