Powder Keg at RCDB |
Powder Keg: A Blast Into The Wilderness, often called Powder Keg, is a super-fast steel launched roller coaster. You can find it at Silver Dollar City in Branson, Missouri. This exciting ride was built by S&S – Sansei Technologies and opened in 2005. Powder Keg is known for being the longest roller coaster at Silver Dollar City.
To save money when building Powder Keg, parts of an older ride were used. This old ride was called Buzz Saw Falls, which was a Water Coaster. For example, the structure for the lift hill from Buzz Saw Falls was kept. You can also see cool reminders of the old ride around the waiting line. Look for an old Buzz Saw Falls car stuck in the roof of a building. There's even a piece of old track sticking out!
How Powder Keg Launches
Before your ride begins, a short sound clip plays. A deep voice says a few things to get you ready. These lines are like a warning before the big blast!
- Hey, that area is restricted!
- You're too close to that nitro!
- Do you smell smoke?
After these warnings, the train moves forward from a building called the "nitro shed." A loud siren goes off, and the stop lights change from red to yellow, then yellow again, and finally green. At the same time, flames shoot out from the nitro shed!
Right after this, the train launches forward very quickly. It uses compressed air to blast off, and your adventure truly begins! In 2007, they added the stoplights and siren to make the launch even more exciting. Before that, only the flames would appear before the launch.
Your Ride on Powder Keg
Once you launch onto the track, you'll zoom up a small hill. Then, you'll go down a very steep drop! The ride takes you up and down many hills. You'll also go through several tight turns that feel super fast.
After all that excitement, the train slowly goes up a chain lift hill. As you go up, you'll hear fun bluegrass music playing from speakers. At the top, the train makes a sharp 90-degree left turn. Then, you'll go down another steep drop onto a blue section of the track.
Near the end of the ride, the train goes through a large helix. This part almost turns the track completely upside down! Finally, the train hits the brakes and slows down. You then turn back into the station, ready to tell everyone about your blast on Powder Keg!
