Prades (pronounced PRAH-des) is a small town in Catalonia, Spain. It is located in an area called the Baix Camp comarca, which is like a county. Prades is part of the Tarragona province.
This town is famous for its beautiful buildings, like the Santa Maria church. You can also visit the Ermita de l'Abellera shrine, which is built into a cliff outside the town.
Prades gives its name to the Prades Mountains that surround it. It's a town high up in the mountains, so winters can be very cold. However, it's a popular place for tourists to visit in the summer.
History of Prades
Founding and Early Growth
Prades has a long and interesting history. In 1159, a powerful ruler named Count Ramon Berenguer IV gave Prades a special document. This document was called a municipal charter. It gave the town the right to govern itself and hold markets.
At this time, the last Saracens were leaving the area. Saracens were people from North Africa who had lived in parts of Spain for a long time. By the year 1200, Prades was already a busy place with its own market. The town quickly grew in size and importance.
The County of Prades
Prades became so important that it was the center of its own region, known as the County of Prades. This county also included another important area called the Barony of Entença.
The County of Prades was quite large, covering about 1,157 square kilometers. Its lands stretched across what are now the Baix Camp, Priorat, and Alt Camp regions.
