Understanding Hidden Meanings
Imagine your friend says, "It's freezing in here!" They might not literally mean the temperature is below zero. They probably want you to close a window or turn up the heat. Pragmatics helps us understand these kinds of hidden requests or feelings.
People often use language indirectly. They might give hints or use phrases that have a double meaning. Pragmatics studies how we still manage to understand each other perfectly. It's a big part of how we communicate every day.
Why Context Matters
The "context" is the situation around what is being said. It includes who is talking, who they are talking to, and where they are. It also includes what has already been said. Pragmatics teaches us that context is super important for understanding.
For example, the word "bank" can mean the side of a river or a place to keep money. How do you know which one someone means? You use the context! If they are holding a fishing rod, they probably mean the river bank. If they are holding a wallet, they mean the money bank. Pragmatics helps us use these clues.
Sometimes, people talk about things they both know. This shared knowledge helps them understand each other quickly. For instance, if you and a friend have an inside joke, you can say just a few words and both understand the funny meaning.
