The Pratt Street Historic District in Hartford, Connecticut, is a special area downtown. It includes all of Pratt Street, from Main Street to Trumbull Street. This block is unique because it's the only place in Hartford that still looks like a typical street from the early 1900s.

There are 15 buildings in this district. Most of them were built between 1830 and 1928. Many famous local architects designed these buildings. Because of its historical importance, the district was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1983. This means it's a place worth protecting for future generations.

What Makes Pratt Street Special?

Pratt Street is a single block that runs east to west in Downtown Hartford. It connects Main Street on one side to Trumbull Street on the other. The street is different from the taller buildings around it. Its buildings are smaller, usually two to six stories high.

Most of these buildings were built between 1896 and 1937. They show off popular building styles from that time. There is one very old building, the Spencer House at 76-78 Pratt Street. It was built in 1830 and reminds us that the street used to have homes.

Famous Buildings and Their Styles

Many interesting buildings stand along Pratt Street. Each one tells a story about the past.

  • The Steiger Building is at the corner of Pratt and Trumbull. It's a six-story building. The bottom floors are made of smooth stone, and the top floors are light brick.
  • Next to the Steiger Building on Trumbull Street is the Heublein Building. This building was finished in 1896. It's built with red brick and brownstone in a style called Romanesque Revival.
  • East of the Steiger Building on Pratt Street is a five-story building from 1897. It shows off the Classical Revival style.
  • The Dillon Building is another important structure. Built in 1899, it's a great example of Beaux Arts architecture in Hartford. An architect named Isaac Allen Jr. is believed to have designed it.
  • Isaac Allen Jr. also designed another building a bit further east. This two-story building from 1919 has cool terra cotta details and lots of glass.
  • At the very end of the street, on the east side, is the Society for Savings Building. It was built in 1925-1926. It has been changed over time to look more modern.
