Precious and the Boo Hag is an exciting children's fairy tale written by Patricia C. McKissack and Onawumi Jean Moss. It features beautiful illustrations by Kyrsten Brooker. This book tells the story of a clever young girl named Precious. She must use her wits to protect her home from a tricky creature called a Boo Hag.
About the Story
This book takes readers on an adventure with Precious. Her mother leaves her home alone with a clear rule: do not let anyone inside. Precious's brother teases her about the Boo Hag, a scary creature that can change its shape. He warns her that the Boo Hag will try "most anything" to get into the house. Precious isn't sure if she should believe him.
The Boo Hag's Arrival
While Precious is alone, a big storm arrives. With the storm comes the Boo Hag, a creature from folklore. This Boo Hag is named Pruella. She is very tricky and tries to fool Precious into letting her inside.
Pruella's Clever Disguises
Pruella the Boo Hag tries many ways to get into the house. First, she pretends to be a thirsty traveler needing a drink. Precious is smart enough to see through this trick. Next, Pruella changes her shape again. She transforms into a neighbor girl, hoping Precious will open the door for a friend. But Precious is still too clever for her.
The Penny Trick
Pruella almost succeeds with her final trick. She changes herself into a shiny new penny. She hopes Precious will pick her up and bring her inside. However, Precious notices something strange about the penny. It has George Washington's face on it instead of Abraham Lincoln's. Real pennies have Lincoln's face. This small detail helps Precious realize it's still the Boo Hag. Just as her brother had said, Pruella "ain't too smart." Precious outwits the Boo Hag and keeps her home safe.
