Prescott, Missouri facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Prescott is a small, quiet place located in northern Texas County, in the state of Missouri in the United States. It is known as an "unincorporated community," which means it doesn't have its own local government or mayor like a city or town would. Instead, it's part of the larger county.

Where is Prescott Located?

Prescott is found about 4.5 miles southwest of a town called Licking. A river named the Big Piney River flows about 1.5 miles to the west of Prescott, which means it's close to nature. You can also find the Prescott Church and its cemetery about half a mile south of the main area.

How Did Prescott Get Its Name?

The community of Prescott got its name from an early resident and important person named Valentine Prescott. He was the first postmaster in the area. A post office was opened in Prescott in 1898. It served the community for many years, helping people send and receive letters and packages, which was very important before emails and phones. The post office stayed open until 1953.

What is an Unincorporated Community?

An unincorporated community is a group of homes or buildings that are not part of an official city or town. They don't have their own city hall, police department, or fire department that is separate from the county. Instead, services like roads, police, and schools are usually managed by the county government. People who live in unincorporated communities still have a strong sense of community, even without a formal local government.
