Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Presencia de América Latina (which means Presence of Latin America) is a huge painting called a mural. It's also known as Integración de América Latina (Integration of Latin America). A talented Mexican artist named Jorge González Camarena painted it between November 1964 and April 1965.

This amazing mural is 300 square meters big! That's like a really large room. It was painted using acrylic paints on a rough wall surface called stucco. You can find it in the main hall of the Casa del Arte (House of Art) at the University of Concepción in Concepción, Chile. The main idea behind this artwork is to show the strong connection and friendship between all the different cultures in Latin America.

A Special Symbol of Concepción

The Presencia de América Latina mural is a very important symbol for the city of Concepción. It's as famous as the clock tower of the University of Concepción. Many people, both from Chile and other countries, come to see this mural. You can often see pictures of it on souvenirs, book covers, and in art catalogs.

In 1994, the mural was even featured on a special postage stamp. This stamp celebrated the University's seventy-fifth birthday. The Chilean government officially recognized the mural as a National Historic Landmark in 2009. This means it's a very important part of Chile's history and culture. It also received a special plaque in 2009 to celebrate Chile's 200th anniversary in 2010.
