Preservation Creek facts for kids
Preservation Creek is a small waterway, also known as a creek. You can find it in the northwest part of New South Wales, which is a state in Australia. It's located to the west of a town called Malparinka.
This creek is about 8.25 kilometers (around 5 miles) long. It starts at a height of 181 meters (about 594 feet) above sea level and flows down to 162 meters (about 531 feet). Another small stream, Nuggets Creek, flows into Preservation Creek.
History of Preservation Creek
Preservation Creek has an important place in Australian exploration history. A famous explorer named Charles Sturt camped here for six months. This was a very difficult time for his team.
James Poole's Grave
During their long stay, one of Sturt's team members, James Poole, sadly passed away. His grave is still there today, marking the spot. Charles Sturt wrote about building a simple structure near the grave. He said it would be a lasting reminder of the hardships they faced in that tough, lonely area.
The Search for an Inland Sea
Sturt and his team had a big goal: they hoped to find a huge inland sea in the middle of Australia. Because of this hope, they even carried a boat with them on their journey!
However, when they reached Preservation Creek, they found something very different. Instead of a vast sea, they discovered a huge, rocky desert. They realized their dream of an inland sea was not going to come true there. Because of this, they launched their boat at Preservation Creek, but then had to leave it behind.
