Kids Encyclopedia Facts

The President Andrew Johnson Museum and Library is a special place where you can learn all about Andrew Johnson, who was once a president of the United States. It's located on the campus of Tusculum University in Greeneville, a town in Tennessee. This museum and library helps us understand more about his life and the history of his time.

Building History

In 1840, Tusculum College needed more space because it had 70 students. They decided to build a new main building. Many people, including Andrew Johnson himself, helped by donating money. They raised $4,245.62 to build it.

This new building opened in October 1841. It had classrooms, a chapel, offices, and a library. It was used for teaching until 1887. Later, as more buildings were added, this old building was called Old College. It was used for different things, like homes for teachers, more classrooms, and even a place for students to live.

In 1993, Old College was carefully fixed up to look like it did originally. It was then turned into the Andrew Johnson Collection. This is where the museum keeps important items and information about President Johnson.

Visiting Today

The museum building is open for visitors from Monday to Friday. You can visit between 9 am and 5 pm. If those times don't work, you can also make a special appointment to see it. It's a great place to explore history!
