Pressure 1 was a fun game show made especially for teenagers and preteens. It was hosted by Mark Long. The show ran for one season, from the fall of 1999 to the spring of 2000. You could watch reruns until September of that year.
The show was produced by Wheeler-Sussman Productions. It was distributed by Hearst-Argyle Television. The episodes were filmed in Boston at the studios of WCVB-TV.
Pressure 1 was part of a special hour-long TV block. It was shown alongside another series called Pressure 2. Interestingly, Pressure 2 was actually just old episodes of a different game show from 1997-98 called Peer Pressure, but they were edited.
How to Play the Game
Unlike the original Peer Pressure show, Pressure 1 focused on general trivia questions. This means it asked about all sorts of different topics. The only things Pressure 1 shared with Peer Pressure were its logo and theme song.
At the end of each round, something funny happened. A short video clip was shown of the player who had just been eliminated. In the clip, they would share their most embarrassing moment! This part of the show was called the "Wall of Shame."
Round 1: Four's a Crowd
This was the first round, and it started with four contestants. They all tried to answer questions. The goal was to be one of the first three players to correctly answer two questions.
Once three players had each answered two questions correctly, the round ended. The one player who had not yet answered two questions was eliminated from the game. This is why the round was called "Four's a Crowd," because one person had to leave!
Round 2: Take That!
The three remaining players moved on to this round. It started with the player who won the first spot in Round 2. This player got to choose one of two question categories. After they picked their category, they answered a question from it.
The category they didn't choose was then given to the other two players. They would buzz in to answer a question from that category. The player who answered correctly then got to choose from two new categories, and the game continued like this. Each correct answer was worth 10 points. When time ran out, the player with the lowest score was eliminated.
Round 3: Pressure Cooker
This was the final round, where the two best players faced off. It was a fast-paced "lightning round." Each player had 60 seconds to answer five questions.
The goal was to answer all five questions in the fastest time. If no one answered all five, then the player who answered the most questions correctly won. Both players got the exact same questions. To make it fair, the second player to play was kept in a special isolation booth. This way, they couldn't hear the questions or answers given by the first player. The winner received a cool prize package!
