PrettyLitter is an American company that helps pet owners. It is based in Los Angeles. The company makes a special kind of lightweight cat litter. This litter is made of crystals. It changes color when a cat uses it. This color change can show if a cat might have health problems. It reacts to the cat's urine, showing if it is too acidic, too alkaline, or if there is blood. PrettyLitter also makes healthy food for cats. In May 2021, a large company called Mars bought PrettyLitter. The deal was reportedly worth $1 billion.
How PrettyLitter Started
PrettyLitter was started in 2015 by a person named Daniel Rotman. He went to the University of California, Berkeley and then to Harvard University. At Harvard, he was a Fellow for the Center for Public Leadership. Before starting PrettyLitter, Rotman worked for a U.S. Congressional leader.
The idea for PrettyLitter came to Daniel after his own cat, Gingi, passed away. He realized there were no easy tools for pet owners to check their cats' health at home. He wanted to create something that could help.
In 2015, PrettyLitter took part in a TV show called Startup U. This show was a competition for new businesses. It aired on ABC Family. Daniel Rotman was one of the finalists. This helped him officially launch PrettyLitter in late 2015.
In August 2016, PrettyLitter joined a program called Gener8tor. This program helps new companies grow quickly. After joining Gener8tor, PrettyLitter's sales grew by 1300 percent in just two months. In May 2021, the big company Mars bought PrettyLitter for about $1 billion.
