PrettyLitter is an American company that helps pet owners take care of their cats. They are based in Los Angeles. The company makes a special kind of lightweight cat litter. This litter is made of crystals that change color when a cat uses it. The color change can show if the cat might have health problems. It reacts to things like how acidic or alkaline the cat's urine is, or if there's blood. PrettyLitter also makes cat food that focuses on health. In May 2021, a big company called Mars bought PrettyLitter.
How PrettyLitter Started
PrettyLitter was started in 2015 by a person named Daniel Rotman. He went to the University of California, Berkeley and also studied at Harvard University. At Harvard, he was a special Fellow for the Center for Public Leadership. Before starting PrettyLitter, Daniel Rotman worked for a leader in the U.S. Congress.
The idea for PrettyLitter came to Daniel after his own cat, Gingi, passed away. He realized there were no easy ways for pet owners to check for health problems in their cats at home. He wanted to create a tool that could help.
In 2015, PrettyLitter took part in a TV show competition called Startup U. This show was a reality series that lasted seven weeks. It was shown on ABC Family from August to October 2015. Daniel Rotman and PrettyLitter were among the finalists in this competition. After the show ended in late 2015, Daniel officially started PrettyLitter from his apartment.
Later, in May 2021, a very large company called Mars bought PrettyLitter. This was a big deal, as reports said the purchase was for more than $1 billion.
