Pretzel is a classic children's picture book from 1944. It was written by Margret Rey and illustrated by H.A. Rey. The story is about a very special dachshund dog named Pretzel. This charming book was first published by Harper & Brothers and later republished in 1997 by Houghton Mifflin.

The Amazing Story of Pretzel

The story begins one morning in May, when five cute little dachshund puppies are born. One of these puppies is a boy named Pretzel. At first, Pretzel looks just like his brothers and sisters. But soon, he starts to grow. And grow! Pretzel becomes super long, much longer than any other dog.

Pretzel grows to be the longest dachshund in the whole world. He even wins a special blue ribbon at a dog show because of his amazing length. Pretzel is so long that he can actually twist his body into the shape of a real pretzel!

Pretzel Meets Greta

Pretzel's unique length makes him quite famous. Humans and other dogs are very impressed by him. But there's one dog who isn't impressed at all: a female dachshund named Greta. Greta lives right across the street from Pretzel.

Pretzel really likes Greta and wants her to like him back. He tries to win her over with gifts and attention. But Greta just isn't interested. She tells Pretzel that she "didn't like long dogs." No matter what Pretzel does, Greta keeps turning him down.

A Heroic Rescue

One day, Pretzel is watching Greta from afar. Suddenly, he sees her fall into a dry water well! The well is too deep for Greta to climb out by herself. Pretzel knows he has to help her.

He quickly hooks his back legs onto the edge of the well. Then, he lowers his super long body down into the well. Pretzel carefully grabs Greta by the scruff of her neck with his teeth and pulls her out to safety.

After Pretzel rescues her, Greta finally sees how special he is. She changes her mind about long dogs and starts to like Pretzel a lot! They decide to get married. The story ends with Pretzel and Greta having five little dachshund puppies of their own, just like the beginning of the book.
