The Prime Minister of Bahrain is a very important leader in the country. They are the head of government, which means they lead the daily running of the country. The King of Bahrain chooses the Prime Minister directly. The person chosen does not have to be an elected member of the Council of Representatives, which is like Bahrain's parliament.
Since Bahrain became an independent country, it has had only two Prime Ministers. The first was Khalifa bin Salman Al Khalifa, who was the King's uncle. The second and current Prime Minister is Salman bin Hamad Al Khalifa, who is also the crown prince. Prince Khalifa bin Salman Al Khalifa passed away on November 11, 2020.
Before becoming Prime Minister, Prince Salman bin Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa held several important roles. He was the deputy king and the crown prince, meaning he was next in line to the throne. He also served as the First Deputy Prime Minister from March 2013 until November 2020.
The current Deputy Prime Minister is Shaikh Khalid bin Abdullah Al Khalifa.
