Khalifa bin Salman Al Khalifa (Arabic: خليفة بن سلمان آل خليفة) was an important royal and politician from Bahrain. He was born on November 24, 1935, and passed away on November 11, 2020. He served as the Prime Minister of Bahrain for a very long time, from January 10, 1970, until his death. This means he was in office for over 50 years! He became Prime Minister even before Bahrain became fully independent in 1971.
Prince Khalifa was known for being the longest-serving prime minister in the world. He was also the uncle of the current King of Bahrain, Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa. His brother, Isa bin Salman Al Khalifa, was the previous ruler (Emir) of Bahrain.

Early Life and Education
Khalifa bin Salman Al Khalifa was born on November 24, 1935. He was the second son of Salman ibn Hamad Al Khalifa, who was the ruler (Hakim) of Bahrain. His mother was Mouza bint Hamad Al Khalifa.
He received his education in Bahrain. He attended Manama High School and the Rifa’a Palace School. These schools helped him prepare for his future roles in government.
His Career in Government
Prince Khalifa started his work in government at a young age. From 1956 to 1958, he was a member of the education council. He then became its leader from 1958 to 1961.
He held many important positions over the years. He was in charge of the finance department from 1961 to 1966. He also led the electricity board and the Manama city council. He helped manage Bahrain's money as head of the Bahrain monetary council.

In 1971, his brother, Emir Isa bin Salman Al Khalifa, made him the Prime Minister. As Prime Minister, Prince Khalifa was in charge of running the government and the economy of Bahrain. His brother, the Emir, focused more on international relations and royal duties.
Prince Khalifa was also the founder of the Housing Ministry in Bahrain. This ministry helps people find homes. He also made changes to the Central Bank of Bahrain, which manages the country's money. He led the Oil and Economic Policy Council, which made important decisions about Bahrain's oil and economy.
In 2017, he received a special honor called the World Peace Culture Award. This award recognized his efforts and contributions.
Family Life
Prince Khalifa married his cousin, Hessa bint Ali Al Khalifa. They had three sons and one daughter together:
- Mohammad bin Khalifa Al Khalifa (who passed away in 1974).
- Ali bin Khalifa Al Khalifa, who also became a Deputy Prime Minister. He has three sons and one daughter.
- Salman bin Khalifa Al Khalifa.
- Lulwa bint Khalifa Al Khalifa, who is an honorary president of a charity organization. She has four sons and three daughters.
His Passing
Prince Khalifa Bin Salman Al Khalifa had some health issues later in his life. He traveled for medical treatment in Germany and the United States.
He passed away on November 11, 2020, at the age of 84. He died at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota, in the U.S. At the time of his death, he had served as Prime Minister for 50 years and 11 months. This made him the longest-serving prime minister in the world's history.
After his death, Bahrain declared a seven-day period of national mourning. Flags were lowered to half-mast, and government offices were closed for three days. He was buried in the Hunainiyah Cemetery in Riffa, Bahrain.
Honors and Awards
Prince Khalifa received many honors from different countries:
- From Malaysia: The Honorary Grand Commander of the Order of the Defender of the Realm (2001).
- From Philippines: The Order of Sikatuna (2001).
- From Spain: The Knight Grand Cross of the Order of Isabella the Catholic (1981).
