The current leader of the Al Khalifa family is Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa. He became the ruler of Bahrain, known as the Emir, in 1999. In 2002, he changed his title to King of Bahrain.
Many important government jobs in Bahrain are held by members of the Al Khalifa royal family. For example, in 2010, about half of the government ministers were from this family.
