History of Cuba's Prime Minister Role
The job of Prime Minister in Cuba started in 1940. This was set up by Cuba's Constitution at that time. The very first Prime Minister was Carlos Saladrigas Zayas. He was the nephew of a past President, Alfredo Zayas. People sometimes called the Prime Minister the "premier."
Between 1940 and 1959, Cuba had many different Prime Ministers. For example, Félix Lancís Sánchez held the job two times. In April 1952, Fulgencio Batista became Prime Minister while also being President. This happened after a big change in the government. Later, in 1959, Fidel Castro took over as Prime Minister. He replaced José Miró Cardona.
In 1976, Cuba adopted a new national constitution. This new law changed how the government worked. The role of Prime Minister was combined with the role of the President. The President then led both the Council of State and the Council of Ministers of Cuba. This new system aimed to make the government more organized.
The Prime Minister's Role Today
On February 24, 2019, Cuba approved a new constitution. This is the constitution Cuba uses now. It brought back the separate jobs of President and Prime Minister. This change helped to reorganize the government once more.
On December 21, 2019, Manuel Marrero was chosen as the new Prime Minister. President Miguel Díaz-Canel picked him for a five-year term. The National Assembly, which is Cuba's main law-making body, fully agreed with this choice on the same day.
