Manuel Marrero Cruz (born on July 11, 1963) is an important Cuban politician. He is currently the Prime Minister of Cuba. This job was brought back in December 2019 after being gone for 43 years. The last person to be Prime Minister before that was Fidel Castro.

Manuel Marrero Cruz is the first person to hold this position in over four decades. He is a member of the Communist Party of Cuba. Before becoming Prime Minister, he was Cuba's Minister of Tourism for a long time, starting in 2004. During his time as tourism minister, Cuba saw a big increase in visitors. He is also an architect and worked for Gaviota, which is the tourism part of the Cuban military. He also held the rank of colonel in the military.

Manuel Marrero Cruz: Early Life and Career

Manuel Marrero Cruz was born in July 1963 in Holguín, a province in eastern Cuba. He studied to become an architect. In 1990, he started working in the tourism industry.

He began his career as an investor with the Gaviota Group. Later, he led the team that planned new projects. He also worked as a deputy director and general director for hotels. He became the head of Gaviota for the eastern provinces. Eventually, he became the president of the entire Gaviota company.

In 2004, Fidel Castro chose him to be the Minister of Tourism. He stayed in this role until December 2019. At that time, he was named the Prime Minister of Cuba. Juan Carlos García Grada took over as the new Minister of Tourism.

How the Prime Minister's Job Returned

After a special vote in 2019 called the 2019 Cuban constitutional referendum, the job of Prime Minister of Cuba was brought back. This position had not existed since Fidel Castro was Prime Minister in 1976.

President Miguel Díaz-Canel officially suggested Manuel Marrero Cruz for the role. All 594 members of the National Assembly of People's Power voted to approve him. This means his appointment was agreed upon by everyone.

Serving as Prime Minister

The new Cuban constitution says that a prime minister can serve for five years. Manuel Marrero Cruz was re-elected to the National Assembly of People's Power in 2023. In the spring of 2023, he was also re-elected to continue leading the Cuban government as Prime Minister.
