Becoming Prime Minister
In 2019, Cuba made a new constitution. This new constitution brought back the job of Prime Minister of Cuba. The last person to be Prime Minister before this was Fidel Castro in 1976.
President Miguel Díaz-Canel officially suggested Manuel Marrero Cruz for the role. All 594 members of the National Assembly of People's Power (Cuba's parliament) agreed with the choice. So, Manuel Marrero Cruz became the Prime Minister in December 2019.
Under Cuba's new constitution, a Prime Minister can serve for five years. In 2023, four years after he first became Prime Minister, he was re-elected to the National Assembly of People's Power. He was then chosen again to lead the Cuban government.
