How a Prime Minister is Chosen
The rules for choosing a Prime Minister are found in Saint Lucia's Constitution. This is like the country's rulebook. It says that the Prime Minister must be a member of the House of Assembly. This is where the country's laws are made.
The Governor-General is the person who officially appoints the Prime Minister. They choose someone who they believe has the support of most members in the House of Assembly. If the House of Assembly is not meeting, they pick someone who was a member just before.
A Prime Minister can lose their job if the House of Assembly votes that they no longer have their trust. This is called a "resolution of no confidence." If this happens, the Prime Minister must resign within three days. Also, if a Prime Minister stops being a member of the House of Assembly, they also lose their position.
