The Prime Minister of Syria was a very important leader in the country of Syria. This person was the head of government, which means they were in charge of running the country's daily affairs. The role existed from 1920 until March 2025.

The official title was the President of the Council of Ministers of the Syrian Arab Republic. After big changes in Syria in late 2024, the Prime Minister led a temporary government.

History of the Prime Minister Role

The Prime Minister Under Ba'athist Rule (1963–2024)

For many years, under the Syrian Arab Republic's rules, the President of Syria chose the Prime Minister. The President also picked other government ministers. The new Prime Minister would then suggest other people to join the government.

After these choices were made, the People's Assembly of Syria (which is like a parliament) had to agree. They would approve the plans for the new government. Once approved, the new government could officially start its work.

There were no strict rules about how long a Prime Minister could serve. Some Prime Ministers even served more than one time. The President of Syria had the power to choose or remove the Prime Minister and their team of ministers at any time.

Changes After 2024 (2024–2025)

Big changes happened in Syria in late 2024. The old rules for how the government worked were stopped. A new set of rules, called the 2025 Interim Constitution, was put in place.

Under these new rules, the President became the main leader. The President now chooses all the ministers directly. This means there is no longer a separate position for a Prime Minister.

On March 29, 2025, a new government was announced. This happened at the Presidential Palace in Damascus. The new ministers took an oath and talked about their plans. This new government replaced the temporary one that was in charge after the big changes. With this new government, the job of Prime Minister was officially ended.
