Understanding the Role of Prime Minister
What a Head of Government Does
A head of government is like the chief manager of a country's daily operations. They lead the cabinet, which is a group of top government officials. They help make sure laws are followed and public services work well.
How the Prime Minister Was Chosen
In Syria, under its old constitution, the president of Syria chose the prime minister. The president also picked other ministers for the government. The new prime minister would then suggest people to join their team.
Approval by the People's Assembly
After the president chose the prime minister, the People's Assembly of Syria had to approve the new government's plans. This was an important step before the new government could officially start its work.
Term Limits and Presidential Power
There were no rules about how long a prime minister could serve. Some prime ministers even served more than once. However, the Syrian president always had the power to appoint or remove the prime minister and their team.
Changes in Syria's Government (2024–2025)
The End of the Old System
The old constitution of Syria was put on hold after the fall of the Assad regime in December 2024. This meant big changes were coming for the government.
A New Way of Governing
A new temporary constitution was created in 2025. This new plan set up a presidential system. In this system, the president holds most of the power. The president now chooses ministers directly, and there is no longer a prime minister.
The Prime Minister's Role Ends
On March 29, 2025, the new Syrian transitional government was announced. This happened at the Presidential Palace in Damascus. The new ministers took an oath and shared their plans. This new government replaced the temporary one that formed after the Assad regime fell. On this day, the job of prime minister was officially ended.
