Prince Gardner facts for kids
Prince Gardner was an important leader in Alabama during a time called Reconstruction. He was a teacher and a church leader before he became a politician. In 1874, he served in the Alabama House of Representatives, which is part of the state's government.
Prince Gardner was born a long time ago, but we don't know the exact year. We do know that in 1872, he was working as a teacher in a place called Barbour County, Alabama. He was also a respected leader in the African Methodist Episcopal (A.M.E.) church in Russell County, Alabama. This church was very important for African American communities during that time.
Serving in Alabama's Government
In 1874, Prince Gardner was elected to the Alabama House of Representatives. This is a group of people who make laws for the state of Alabama. He represented the people of Russell County, Alabama. Being a state legislator meant he helped decide how the state was run and what rules everyone should follow.
However, his time in office was short. Prince Gardner and another African American representative, D. J. Daniels, were removed from their positions. This happened because some people challenged the election results. They claimed that many votes for Gardner and Daniels were not valid. Because of these challenges, Prince Gardner was "unseated," meaning he was removed from his role as a state representative. Other representatives, Allen E. Williams, Edward Odum, and Adam Gachet from Barbour County, Alabama, were also removed from the House around the same time.
A Voice for Change
Even after being unseated, Prince Gardner continued to be involved in politics. He was one of the Republican members of the Alabama Legislature who signed an important letter. This letter, called a "Memorial," was sent to the Congress of the United States. It showed that Prince Gardner was committed to speaking up for his community and for what he believed was right.
