Prince Naga facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Prince Naga (pronounced Nah-gah) was an important Japanese prince who lived a long time ago. He was the son of Emperor Tenmu and Princess Ōe. His mother, Princess Ōe, was also the daughter of another emperor, Emperor Tenji. This meant Prince Naga came from a very important family! He had a full brother named Prince Yuge. Prince Naga passed away on July 9, 715.

Prince Naga's Life and Role

In the year 693, when Emperor Jito was ruling, Prince Naga and his brother Prince Yuge were given a special rank. This rank was called Kiyohiro 2, which was a high position in the government. Later, in 701, new rules for court ranks were made. Prince Naga then became a Nihon, which was another important title.

During the time of Emperor Monmu and Empress Genmei, Prince Naga received land. He was given 200 fudo (which means land units) in the years 704 and 714. Because his grandfather was Emperor Tenji, Prince Naga had a very strong family background. It was thought he might become a very high-ranking official, like Imperial Prince Hozumi.

However, Prince Naga died on June 4, 715. This was about a month before Imperial Prince Hozumi passed away. We don't know his exact age when he died. But, based on when his daughter Princess Chinu was born, historians believe he was in his mid-forties to early fifties.

Some people believe that Prince Naga was buried in the famous Kitora Tomb. This tomb is known for its beautiful ancient paintings.
