The Story of Prince Biscuits
Early Beginnings
The idea of a "Prince biscuit" is quite old! It first showed up in a cookbook in the early 1600s. In 1894, a first version of the Prince biscuit was made. It was created in Antwerp, Belgium. This biscuit honored King Leopold II of Belgium. He visited a cookie maker's display at a big fair. The first biscuit was dry and had the Belgian coat of arms on it.
The Creamy Sandwich Appears
In 1927, the biscuit got a yummy upgrade! It was changed to have a cream layer. This cream was put between two round biscuit layers. This new version was called "Prince Fourré." There's a fun story about the Prince Fourré. Some people say it was named after Prince Leopold III. They say he loved chocolate but didn't want to get his fingers messy. However, the name "Prince" was actually chosen much earlier. It was named by De Beukelaer in honor of King Leopold II.
Changing Hands and New Flavors
In 1960, the biscuit making moved to a new building. Then, in 1965, the company joined with another cookie maker. They became one big company called General Biscuits. Later, in 1980, General Biscuits was taken over by LU. Soon, the classic biscuit changed to a golden color. In the 1990s, new flavors came out. These included vanilla and milk chocolate. Different sizes of the biscuits also appeared.
The Prince brand has been owned by several large companies. One of them was Danone. In 2007, it became part of the American company Kraft Foods. Since 2012, the Prince de LU brand has been owned by Mondelez International. Prince was the number one biscuit brand in France in 2012. More than half of French families with children bought Prince biscuits in 2013.
