What the Iriomote Cat Looks Like
The Iriomote cat is a bit bigger than a regular house cat. It has rounder ears and spots instead of stripes, like a tabby cat. Its fur is usually dark gray and brown.
Where They Live and What They Eat
These cats live in forests and on hills where there are streams. They have even been seen on beaches! Iriomote cats are good at climbing trees and can also swim.
On Iriomote Island, there are not many small mammals like mice. So, these cats eat many different things. They hunt insects, lizards, fish, and even shrimp.
Reproduction and Life Cycle
Female Iriomote cats give birth to 1 to 4 kittens at a time. They make their dens in trees or in cracks in rocks. People have seen kittens as young as three months old living on their own. Scientists believe it takes about 10 to 12 months for these cats to become adults.
Protecting the Iriomote Cat
Scientists think there are fewer than 1000 Iriomote cats left in the wild. Some believe there might be only about 100. This cat is an endangered species. This means it is at risk of disappearing forever.
One big problem is habitat loss. This happens when humans build things in the places where the cats live. Another danger is cars. Some cats get hit by cars when they come to the road to eat dead animals.
To help protect these cats, people on Iriomote Island are working hard. Veterinarians have taught people to spay and neuter their pet cats. This stops pet cats from mating with the wild Iriomote cats. The local government has also tried to get drivers to slow down. The government of Japan has made part of Iriomote Island a special wildlife protection area.
In the past, some people on Iriomote Island felt that the government cared more about the cats than the people. However, scientists showed that the cats can live near humans. They are not afraid to look for food near farms and rice fields. Today, many islanders are proud of their rare wildcat. They also worry that too many tourists might visit and harm the island.
