Priscilla Marie Pointer (born May 18, 1924 – died April 28, 2025) was a talented American actress. She started her acting journey in plays on Broadway in the late 1940s. Later, she moved to Hollywood and began appearing on television shows in the early 1950s.
Priscilla was the mother of famous actress and singer Amy Irving. This also means she was the former mother-in-law of well-known filmmakers Steven Spielberg and Bruno Barreto.

Priscilla Pointer was born in New York City on May 18, 1924. Her mother, Augusta Leonora, was an artist and illustrator. Her father, Kenneth Keith Pointer, was also an artist. Priscilla came from a family with a long history in the United States. She lived to be 100 years old, celebrating her 100th birthday in May 2024.
Priscilla passed away in Ridgefield, Connecticut, on April 28, 2025. Her daughter, Amy Irving, shared the sad news the very next day.
Family and Marriages
Priscilla Pointer was married to Jules Irving, a director for films and plays. He was also in charge of the Lincoln Center arts complex for a time. They were married from 1947 until he passed away in 1979. They had three children: Katie Irving, director David Irving, and actress Amy Irving.
Later, in 1980, Priscilla married Robert Symonds. He passed away in 2007.
Priscilla's Acting Career
Starting Out
Priscilla Pointer began performing in the late 1940s. She started in theater, appearing in many plays on Broadway. She even toured in famous plays like "A Streetcar Named Desire." In 1954, she also appeared in the TV series China Smith. After a break, Priscilla returned to acting in the early 1970s.
Her first big role on TV was in the soap opera Where the Heart Is. She played Adrienne Harris Rainey from 1972 to 1973. She also guest-starred on the popular TV show Dallas as Rebecca Barnes Wentworth.
Movies She Starred In
Priscilla Pointer appeared in many movies. One famous film was Carrie (1976), where she played the mother of her real-life daughter, Amy Irving's character. They also played mother and daughter in Honeysuckle Rose (1980) and Carried Away (1996).
Other notable films include The Onion Field (1979), Mommie Dearest (1981), and Twilight Zone: The Movie (1983). She also appeared in the horror film A Nightmare on Elm Street 3: Dream Warriors (1987) and David Lynch's Blue Velvet.
Priscilla also acted in three movies directed by her son, David Irving. These were Rumpelstiltskin (1987), Good-bye, Cruel World, and C.H.U.D. II: Bud the C.H.U.D.. Her daughter, Amy, even starred in Rumpelstiltskin!
