Prix Sorcières facts for kids

The Prix Sorcières is a special award given out every year in France. It celebrates amazing books written for children and young people. The award started in 1986, and it's a big deal in the world of children's literature!

The winners are chosen by two groups: the ALSJ (which is a group of bookstores specializing in youth books) and the ABF (a group of librarians in France). They work together to pick the best books.

Books can be written in French or translated into French from other languages. Many famous authors from outside France have won this prize, like Anthony Browne, Anne Fine, Michael Morpurgo, and J. K. Rowling.

History of the Prix Sorcières

Before 2018, the Prix Sorcières had different categories. These included:

• Toddlers (Tout-Petits) for very young children.
• Album (Albums) for picture books.
• Early readers (Premières lectures) for kids just starting to read on their own.
• Novels (Romans) for longer stories.
• Junior novels (Romans juniors) for middle-grade readers.
• Adolescent novels (Romans ados) for teenagers.
• Non-fiction (Documentaires) for books that teach facts and information.
• There was also a Special prize given out for various reasons, sometimes celebrating an author's work over many years.

Many wonderful books and authors have been recognized by the Prix Sorcières throughout its history, helping young readers discover new stories and learn about the world.
