Professor of Divinity (Glasgow) facts for kids
A Professor of Divinity is a special teaching role at the University of Glasgow. This person studies and teaches about divinity, which means the study of religion and God. It is an important academic position at the university.
History of the Role
Early Beginnings
The University of Glasgow has taught divinity since it first opened in 1451. However, a specific teaching position, known as a "Chair," was officially created in 1577. This was part of a major plan by King James VI called the Nova Erectio. For many years, the head of the university, known as the Principal, also held this teaching role. The last Principal to hold this Chair was Herbert Story, from 1898 to 1907.
Two Important Chairs
In 1640, a second Chair of Divinity was created. The person holding this new position was then considered the main Professor of Divinity. It's also good to know that there is another role called the Professor of Divinity and Biblical Criticism.
