What is a Professor of Humanity?

This important job at the University of Glasgow is all about the study of "Humanity." In the past, this mainly meant teaching the Latin language and its literature. It's a very old and respected position.

How the Job Started

Back in 1618, under a new rule called the Nova Erectio by James VI, the main teachers (called Regents) were in charge of teaching Latin. Sometimes, one of these Regents was also given the title of Professor of Humanity.

Later, in 1682, a separate, permanent teaching position (called a Chair) was created just for the Professor of Humanity. This job stopped for a while but was brought back in 1706.
