Profira Sadoveanu (born May 21, 1906 – died September 12, 2003) was a Romanian writer and poet. She wrote many different kinds of books, including novels, poems, and stories for children. She was also known for her memoirs about her famous father, Mihail Sadoveanu.

Early Life and Education

Profira Sadoveanu was born in Fălticeni, Romania. Her father was the well-known novelist Mihail Sadoveanu, and her mother was Ecaterina Bâlu. Growing up, she was surrounded by literature and writing.

She went to Nicu Gane High School in her hometown from 1917 to 1918. She also took private lessons from her father. Later, she attended Oltea Doamna High School in Iași, graduating in 1925.

After high school, Profira studied philosophy at Iași University from 1925 to 1929. However, she did not complete her final exams. She also dreamed of studying acting in Paris, but her father did not allow it.

Her Writing Career

Profira Sadoveanu began her writing journey by publishing articles under the pen name Valer Donea. Her first novel, Mormolocul, was published in 1933. Another novel, Naufragiații din Aukland, followed in 1937.

She wrote many books throughout her life. These included:

  • Interviews: Domniile lor domnii și doamnele (1937), later republished as Stele și luceferi (1969).
  • Memoirs: She wrote several books about her father, Mihail Sadoveanu. These include O zi cu Sadoveanu (1955), Viața lui Mihail Sadoveanu (1957), republished as Ostrovul zimbrului (1966), În umbra stejarului (1965), and Planeta părăsită (1970).
  • Poems: She published collections of poems like Ploi și ninsori (1940), Somnul pietrei (1971), Cântecele lui Ștefan Vodă (1974), Flori de piatră (1980), and Ora violetă (1984).
  • Children's Books: Profira also wrote verses for children, such as Balaurul alb (1955) and Ochelarii bunicii (1969).

Her writing style was greatly influenced by her father's detailed descriptions. However, she added her own unique and sensitive touch to her stories and poems.

Translator Work

Besides her own writing, Profira Sadoveanu also worked as a translator. She translated books by famous authors like Anton Chekhov, Konstantin Ushinsky, Alexander Ostrovsky, and Honoré de Balzac. She often worked with her stepmother, Valeria, on these translations. She also helped to republish her father's books.

Profira Sadoveanu passed away in Bucharest on September 12, 2003.
