Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Progress is a small, unincorporated community located in Pike County, Mississippi. It's a place where people live, but it doesn't have its own local government like a city or town.

What is Progress?

Progress is a quiet community in the southern part of Mississippi. It's known as an "unincorporated community" because it's not officially a city or a town. This means it's part of the larger county and doesn't have its own mayor or city council.

The History of Progress

The community of Progress got its name because of an interesting idea about education.

How Progress Got Its Name

A post office was opened in Progress in 1937. It stayed open for about 18 years, closing in 1955. The people in the community wanted their local school to use a special way of teaching called "progressive education." This idea was quite new at the time, and it focused on teaching students through hands-on activities and real-world problems, rather than just memorizing facts. Because of this focus on new and forward-thinking education, the community decided to name itself Progress.
