Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Prohibition City is a small, unnamed place in Worth County, in the U.S. state of Missouri. It is known as an unincorporated community, which means it doesn't have its own local government like a city or town does. Back in 1943, a school called Smithton School was located close to this area. It was about 1.5 miles northeast of the town of Worth.

The Story Behind Prohibition City

This area has an interesting past, including a few different names!

From Smithton to Prohibition City

Long ago, this place was known as "Smithton." For a while, Smithton was even the county seat for Worth County. A county seat is like the main town where the government offices for the county are located. However, the number of people living in Smithton became much smaller after the county seat was moved to a different town called Grant City.

A post office opened in Smithton in 1861, but it closed in 1870. Then, in 1877, the post office reopened with a new name: Prohibition City! This post office stayed open for a few years before closing for good in 1881.

Why the Name "Prohibition"?

The unique name "Prohibition City" came from one of the first people who settled there. This person strongly believed in something called prohibition politics. In simple terms, this meant they wanted to make it illegal to make, sell, or drink alcoholic drinks. This idea was known as prohibition. Because of this settler's strong beliefs, the area got its unusual and memorable name.
