Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Project Ara was a cool idea from Google to create a special kind of smartphone. Imagine a phone you could build yourself, like with Lego bricks! That's what Project Ara was all about. It aimed to make a phone platform where you could easily swap out parts like the camera, battery, or even the screen.

Google wanted this phone to be useful for "six billion people" around the world. It was planned to come in three different sizes. Google first announced this exciting project in October 2013. It was led by a person named Paul Eremenko.

What is a Modular Smartphone?

A modular smartphone is like a puzzle where each piece does something different. Instead of buying a whole new phone when one part breaks or you want an upgrade, you just swap out that one part.

How Project Ara Phones Would Work

Project Ara phones had a main frame, which was like the phone's skeleton. Then, you could attach different "modules" to this frame. These modules were small blocks that contained things like:

  • A better camera
  • A bigger battery
  • More storage space
  • Special sensors (like a health tracker)
  • Even a mini-speaker or a game controller!

This meant you could customize your phone exactly how you wanted it. If you loved taking photos, you could get a super camera module. If you traveled a lot, you could add an extra battery module.

Why Was Project Ara a Big Deal?

Project Ara was exciting for several reasons:

Customization for Everyone

Imagine being able to design your phone to fit your exact needs and hobbies. Project Ara promised this freedom. You wouldn't be stuck with a phone that had features you didn't want.

Easy to Repair and Upgrade

If your phone screen cracked, you wouldn't need to buy a whole new phone or pay a lot for repairs. You could just buy a new screen module and snap it into place. This also meant you could keep your phone for longer by upgrading parts as new technology came out, instead of replacing the whole device.

Helping the Environment

By letting people upgrade parts instead of throwing away entire phones, Project Ara could have helped reduce electronic waste. This is good for our planet!

The Journey of Project Ara

Project Ara started at Motorola Mobility, which was owned by Google at the time. When Google sold Motorola to Lenovo, the Project Ara team stayed with Google.

Testing and Development

The team worked hard to make these modular phones a reality. They showed off early versions of the phone, called prototypes, at special events. People were really excited about the idea of building their own phones.

Why Project Ara Ended

Sadly, Google decided to stop Project Ara in September 2016. Even though it was a very cool idea, it faced many challenges. It was hard to make all the different modules work perfectly together, and it was also difficult to make the phones affordable and easy for everyone to use.

The Legacy of Project Ara

Even though Project Ara didn't become a product you could buy, its ideas still live on. It showed the world what was possible with modular design and inspired other companies to think about how phones could be more customizable and sustainable. It pushed the boundaries of what we thought a smartphone could be!
