Promont is a special old house located in Milford, Ohio, United States. It was built in 1865 and is recognized as an important historical place. In 1980, it was added to the National Register of Historic Places. This house was once the home of John M. Pattison, who served as the 43rd Governor of Ohio. He lived there from 1879 until his death in 1906.

Promont's Story

Building a Historic Home

Promont was built in 1865 by a person named William McGrue. It was constructed on a hill, giving it a great view of the village of Milford, OH and the Little Miami River. The house is designed in a style called Italianate Victorian. This means it has a fancy, classic look with features popular in the Victorian era.

Home of a Governor

In 1879, John M. Pattison bought Promont. He later became the 43rd Governor of Ohio. Promont served as his home while he was governor. Governor Pattison became very ill with a kidney disease. Because of his health, he could not stay in the state capital, Columbus, after his inauguration on January 8, 1906.

He returned to Promont that same day and never went back to Columbus. Governor Pattison continued to lead the state government from his home at Promont. He managed state affairs from there until he passed away on June 18, 1906.

Becoming a Museum

Promont remained a private home for many years after Governor Pattison's death. In 1983, James Kirgan generously donated the house to the Greater Milford Area Historical Society. Before this, Promont was officially recognized as a historic site. It was placed on the National Register of Historic Places on November 21, 1980.

Promont Today

Today, Promont is a historic house museum. This means it is open to the public for visits. The inside of the house is decorated with furniture and items from the Victorian era. Visitors can take tours to see how people lived in the past.

The museum also has special exhibits about local history. These exhibits help people learn about the Milford area's past. There is also a historical library inside Promont. This library has information and books for people who want to research local history.
