Promont was built in 1865 by a person named William McGrue. It was built on a hill overlooking the village of Milford, OH and the Little Miami River. This beautiful house is designed in the Italianate Victorian style.

A Governor's Home

In 1879, John M. Pattison bought Promont. He was a very important person who became the 43rd Governor of Ohio. Promont became his official home while he was governor.

Governor Pattison became very unwell during his time in office. After his inauguration on January 8, 1906, he was too sick to stay in the state capital. He returned home to Promont that very day. He never went back to Columbus, the capital city. Instead, Governor Pattison managed the state government from his home at Promont until he passed away on June 18, 1906.

Promont Becomes a Museum

Promont remained a private home for many years. In 1983, James Kirgan generously donated the house. He gave it to the Greater Milford Area Historical Society. This made it possible for the public to visit and learn about its history.

Because of its importance, Promont was officially added to the National Register of Historic Places. This happened on November 21, 1980.
