The Protectworth Tavern, also known as the Stickney Tavern, is a very old and important house in Springfield, New Hampshire. It's a special building because it shows us what homes looked like a long time ago, especially around the late 1700s and early 1800s. This tavern was built when a big road called the "Fourth New Hampshire Turnpike" was being made. Today, that old road is part of New Hampshire Route 4A.

The house was used as a tavern for many years. A tavern was like a hotel and restaurant where travelers could stop. The Protectworth Tavern was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1980. This means it's recognized as an important historical place.

A Glimpse into History: Protectworth Tavern

The Protectworth Tavern is a great example of an old building style. It combines features from the Georgian and Federal periods of architecture. These styles were popular in America during the late 1700s and early 1800s. The house has kept much of its original look and feel.

A Busy Roadside Stop

The tavern was built along a major road called the "Fourth New Hampshire Turnpike." This turnpike was an important early highway. It helped people travel through central New Hampshire. Today, Route 4A follows the path of this old road.

  • Early Owners: One of the first owners was Daniel Noyes. He was a "proprietor" of the Turnpike. This means he was one of the people who owned and managed the road.
  • Important Meetings: The owners of the Turnpike even held their meetings at the tavern. This shows how important the Protectworth Tavern was to the area.
  • Stagecoach Driver: Later, a man named Nathaniel Stickney owned the tavern. He was also a stagecoach driver on the route. Stagecoaches were like old-fashioned buses pulled by horses.

What Does It Look Like?

The Protectworth Tavern is located north of Springfield's village center. You can find it on the west side of NH 4A. The house is angled a bit differently from the road now. This is because the road has been changed since the tavern was built.

  • Size and Shape: It's a large building with two and a half stories. It's made of wood and has a gabled roof. A gabled roof has two sloping sides that meet at a ridge.
  • Outside Walls: The outside walls are covered with "clapboards." These are long, thin boards that overlap each other.
  • Chimneys: You can see brick chimneys rising through the front of the roof.
  • Front of the House: The main front of the house has five sections, or "bays." The windows are placed evenly around the main door.
  • Main Entrance: The front door has a simple frame. Above the door, there's a small window called a "transom window." The top part of the door frame, called the "lintel," is slightly flared.

Inside the Tavern

The inside of the Protectworth Tavern has not changed much over the years. This is quite special for such an old building.

  • Small Changes: One of the biggest changes was moving a wall on the first floor. This made the room that used to be the kitchen much bigger.
  • Original Features: Many of the original parts of the house are still there. This includes things like old doors, floorboards, and wall finishes. You can see these on both the first and second floors.
