Providence is a small place in Indiana that doesn't have its own local government like a city or town. It's known as an unincorporated community. You can find Providence in Johnson County, specifically within Union Township.
History of Providence
Long ago, Providence had a different name: Union Village. This community was officially planned out and mapped in 1837. When a place is "plat"ted, it means its streets and lots are carefully laid out on a map.
Later, in 1880, a post office opened right here in Providence. This was a big deal because people could send and receive mail without traveling far. The post office served the community for many years. However, it eventually closed down in 1908.
