Psyche Williams-Forson is an American scholar and writer. She grew up in Virginia. Today, she is a professor at the University of Maryland. She leads the American Studies department there.

Her School Journey

Psyche Williams-Forson is an African-American scholar. She earned her Ph.D. (a high-level degree) in American Studies from the University of Maryland in 2002. Before that, she completed her Master's degree in the same field in 1994.

In 1994, she also earned a certificate in Women's Studies. This area of study looks at women's experiences and roles in society. She received her first degree, a bachelor's, in English and African-American Studies in 1997.

What She Studies

Professor Williams-Forson is very interested in American history. She focuses on the 1800s and 1900s. Her work explores how people lived, their cultures, and especially how food connects to history. She looks at topics like race, gender, and everyday objects.

Current Research Projects

She is currently working on several exciting projects. One project looks at "food shaming" and how food rules affect people. Another project explores how Black women in rural Virginia managed their money. She also studies how African American social classes are shown through home interiors.

Interviews and Talks

Professor Williams-Forson has shared her knowledge in many interviews. In 2004, she was interviewed by the Southern Foodways Alliance in Mississippi. She also gave a presentation in 2001 about "How We Talk About Feeding the World." This talk was recorded for a video project.

In 2004, she was interviewed by Melissa Harris-Perry on MSNBC. They discussed how food history connects to many different subjects. They talked about the "History of Food, Race, and Identity in America."

Awards and Special Honors

Professor Williams-Forson has received several important awards and fellowships:

  • She earned a Postdoctoral Diversity Fellowship from the Ford Foundation. This helps scholars from diverse backgrounds.
  • She received the Foxworth Creative Enterprise Initiative.
  • She was honored by the Academy for Innovation and Entrepreneurship.
  • In 2023, she won a James Beard Award for Food Issues and Advocacy. This is a very respected award in the food world.
