The beautiful fruit dove (Ptilinopus pulchellus) is a small, colorful bird. It is also known as the rose-fronted pigeon or crimson-capped fruit dove. This dove is about 19 centimeters (7.5 inches) long. It is mostly green and very pretty to look at.

The beautiful fruit dove has a bright red cap on its head. Its throat is whitish, and its beak is a greenish-yellow color. It has purplish-red feet. Its chest is blue-grey, and its belly is yellowish-orange. There is also a reddish-purple patch on its belly. Both male and female doves look very similar.

Where Does It Live?

This amazing bird lives in the rainforests of New Guinea. You can also find it on nearby islands like Batanta, Waigeo, Salawati, and Misool. These islands are part of West Papua, Indonesia. They usually live in flat areas within these rainforests. When it's time to lay eggs, the female dove typically lays just one white egg.

The beautiful fruit dove loves to eat fruit! Its diet is mainly made up of different kinds of fruits. These fruits come from trees, palm trees, and climbing plants called vines. Even though they are small, these doves can swallow fruits that are about 2 centimeters (0.8 inches) wide. Sometimes, bigger pigeons might push them away from fruit trees.
