The climbing mulla mulla (scientific name: Ptilotus divaricatus) is a unique grass-like plant. It belongs to the Amaranthaceae family. This plant family also includes well-known plants like spinach and quinoa!

Where Does This Plant Grow?

The climbing mulla mulla is special because it grows only in one place. You can find it only in Western Australia. This means it is a native plant to that part of the world.

How This Plant Got Its Name

Plants get their scientific names from botanists, who are scientists who study plants. The climbing mulla mulla was first described in 1829. A French botanist named Charles Gaudichaud-Beaupré gave it the name Trichinium divaricatum.

Later, in 1868, another famous botanist, Ferdinand von Mueller, studied the plant again. He decided it belonged to a different group of plants called Ptilotus. So, he changed its scientific name to Ptilotus divaricatus. This is why plants sometimes have more than one old name.
