Pueblo Viejo is a special kind of town called a municipality in the Azua Province of the Dominican Republic.
A Look Back in Time
Pueblo Viejo has a long and interesting history. Back in 1504, a famous explorer named Diego Velázquez de Cuéllar started a new town here. He was known for exploring and taking over Cuba.
This new town was called Azua de Compostela. It got its name from an early Spanish settler, Don Pedro Gallego. He came from a place in Spain called Santiago de Compostela. The first part of the town's name, "Azua," came from the local Native American language.
Sadly, the old city was destroyed by a big earthquake. This happened on October 16, 1751. After the earthquake, the people living there moved. They went a bit north, close to a river. There, they built a brand new town.
