Puerta de Bisagra facts for kids
The Puerta de Bisagra is a famous city gate in Toledo, Spain. It was once known as Bab al-Saqra and sometimes called the Puerta de Alfonso VI. This gate was the main entrance to the city for a long time.
History of the Bisagra Gate
The original Puerta de Bisagra was built a very long time ago, in the 10th century. This was during the time when the Moors ruled parts of Spain. Toledo was then part of an Islamic kingdom called the Taifa of Toledo, which was part of Al-Andalus.
This old gate is often called 'Bisagra Antigua' (which means 'Old Bisagra') to help people tell it apart from a newer gate. The Puerta de Bisagra Nueva was built much later, in 1559. Both gates are important parts of Toledo's history.
