Pukeiti is a small but interesting volcano located in the Auckland volcanic field in New Zealand. It's known for being the smallest volcano in Auckland.

Pukeiti: Auckland's Smallest Volcano

Pukeiti is a type of volcano called a spatter cone. It stands about 30 metres (98 ft) (around 98 feet) above sea level. Imagine a small hill! It also has a wide, shallow crater that is over 30 metres (98 ft) across.

How Pukeiti Was Formed

Long ago, Pukeiti was an active volcano. When it erupted, hot, sticky lava burst out from its vent. This lava then flowed outwards, creating a large area of solidified rock to the north and east of the cone.

Over time, parts of the crater rim were "quarried." This means that rock was dug out from the south and east sides of the crater. People often quarry volcanoes for their rock, which can be used in building.

Pukeiti Today

Today, Pukeiti is no longer an active volcano. It is a peaceful part of the Otuataua Stonefields reserve. This reserve is a special place where you can learn about Auckland's volcanic past and the history of the area.

What Does Pukeiti Mean?

The name Pukeitī comes from the Māori language. The New Zealand Ministry for Culture and Heritage explains that "Pukeitī" means "cabbage tree hill." This name likely describes the types of plants that grew on the volcano.
