Pumpuang Duangjan (pronounced Poom-poo-ang Doo-ang-jan), also known by her nickname Pueng (meaning "Bee"), was a very famous Thai singer and actress. She was born on August 4, 1961, and passed away on June 13, 1992. Pumpuang was a true superstar and a symbol of Thai music.
She was a singer and actress who helped create a new style of music called "electronic Luk Thung". Luk Thung is a type of Thai country music. Pumpuang is seen as one of the most important Luk Thung singers in Thailand.
Pumpuang grew up in a poor farming family. She only went to primary school for two years. After that, she had to work in the fields cutting sugar cane to help her family. Even though she couldn't read well, she was amazing at remembering song lyrics. She often joined local singing contests. When she was 15, a band leader named Waiphot Phetsuphan noticed her talent. From the late 1970s, her fame grew incredibly fast.

Pumpuang's Legacy
Today, Pumpuang is remembered for her songs that told stories about the lives of poor people in rural Thailand. She changed traditional pleng luk thung (Thai country music) into a style that was easy to dance to. This new style became known as electronic luk thung.
Even though millions of fans loved her music, Pumpuang faced many challenges with her finances. This made it hard for her to get the medical care she needed for a blood disorder. She sadly passed away at the age of 30.
In 2018, Pumpuang Duangjan was honored with a Google Doodle. This special drawing appeared on the Google homepage on what would have been her 57th birthday.
