About Punakha District

Punakha District is located in the western part of Bhutan. It used to be the capital city of Bhutan until 1955. Even though it's not the capital anymore, it remains a very important place. Many significant events in Bhutan's history have happened here.

A large part of Jigme Dorji National Park is located within Punakha District. This national park is one of the most important protected areas in Bhutan. It is home to many different kinds of plants and animals.
