Scientific classification

Pupisoma dioscoricola is a tiny land snail. It is a type of gastropods, which are a group of animals that include snails and slugs. This particular snail belongs to the family Valloniidae.

Scientists have identified two main types, or subspecies, of Pupisoma dioscoricola:

  • Pupisoma dioscoricola dioscoricola (first described in 1845)
  • Pupisoma dioscoricola insigne (first described in 1920)

Where Does This Snail Live?

This snail species can be found almost all over the world. This is called a cosmopolitan distribution. You can find Pupisoma dioscoricola in many places.

It lives in the United States, specifically in Florida and Texas. It also lives further south, all the way to southern Brazil and northern Argentina. Sometimes, snails can spread to new places because of human activities. This might be why it's found in so many different areas.

The snail has also been found in Micronesia, which is a group of islands in the Pacific Ocean. A broken piece of this snail was even found in Afghanistan in 1979.

What Kind of Home Does It Like?

Pupisoma dioscoricola's natural habitats are places with lots of trees, like temperate forests. It also likes warm, dry areas with shrubs, known as subtropical or tropical dry shrubland.

Sadly, this snail is facing a threat. Its home, or habitat, is being lost. This means there are fewer places for these snails to live and thrive.
