Purves, Texas facts for kids

Purves is a small, unincorporated community located in Erath County, Texas. It's found in the southwestern part of the county. You can find Purves along Fm-219 South, about seven miles south of the city of Dublin.

The Story of Purves

The community of Purves was named after two local men. Both of them were named Purves. These men helped start the first post office and a church in the area around the 1890s.

Around the year 1900, Purves had its largest population. About 117 people lived there at that time. The Purves Post Office closed in 1907. It had been open for only about 10 years.

By the late 1940s, the number of people living in Purves had gone down. The population was around 95 residents. At that time, Purves had a school, two churches, and two businesses. In the 1980s, the population was about 50 people. This number stayed about the same through the 1990s and 2000s. Today, the First Baptist Church of Purves still serves the community.

Learning in Purves

The very first school in the Purves area was called Field's School. It was named after G.C. and Elizabeth Field. The Purves school officially began in 1899. This happened when Field's School joined with another school called Live Oak. Later, in 1951, the Purves school became part of the Dublin Public Schools system.
