Pyxidanthera barbulata var. brevifolia (Wells) H.E. Ahles

The littleleaf pixiemoss, also known as sandhills pyxie-moss (scientific name: Pyxidanthera brevifolia), is a special kind of plant. It is a small, low-growing plant that is only found in two states in the United States: North Carolina and South Carolina.

What is Pyxie-Moss?

Littleleaf pyxie-moss is a unique plant species. It is known for its tiny leaves and pretty flowers. This plant is a close relative of another plant called P. barbulata. Even though they are similar, scientists consider Pyxidanthera brevifolia its own distinct species.

Where Does it Grow?

This interesting plant loves to grow in very sandy soil. You can often find it in places like sand hills or sandy ridgetops. Sometimes, it also grows in open forests where pine and oak trees are common. It prefers areas that are not too high up, usually between 50 and 200 meters (about 164 to 656 feet) above sea level.

How to Spot Littleleaf Pyxie-Moss

It can be tricky to tell the littleleaf pyxie-moss apart from its close relative, P. barbulata. However, there are a few key differences in their leaves. The leaves of Pyxidanthera brevifolia are quite short, usually less than 4 millimeters (about 0.16 inches) long.

Another way to tell them apart is by looking closely at the edges of the leaves. Pyxidanthera brevifolia leaves do not have the tiny hairs, called cilia, that are found on the edges of P. barbulata leaves. Also, the underside of the littleleaf pyxie-moss leaves feels more "woolly" or fuzzy.
