Spider tortoise facts for kids
The spider tortoise (Pyxis arachnoides) is a special kind of tortoise that lives only on the island of Madagascar. It's one of just two species in its group, called Pyxis. These tortoises are quite small and have unique patterns on their shells that look a bit like a spider's web, which is how they got their name! Sadly, they are in danger of disappearing from the wild.

Where They Live
Spider tortoises are found only in the southwestern part of Madagascar. They live in sandy areas near the coast, where there are many spiny plants. This tough vegetation helps them hide and find food.
Life Cycle and Reproduction
Scientists don't know a lot about the full life cycle of the spider tortoise. However, it's thought that these tortoises can live for a very long time, possibly up to 70 years!
During the dry season, spider tortoises often go into a resting period, like a long nap. They eat young leaves, small insects, and even things left behind by larger animals. When the wet season begins, they wake up and start to mate.
Female spider tortoises lay only one egg at a time. This egg then takes a long time to hatch, usually between 220 and 250 days.
Protecting Spider Tortoises
The spider tortoise is an endangered animal. It is against the law to trade them in Madagascar. However, many are still illegally taken from the wild. They are often smuggled out of the country to be sold as illegal pets. Some are also taken for food or other uses. Efforts are being made to protect these unique tortoises and their homes.
