Päivi Maria Räsänen (born December 19, 1959) is a politician from Finland. Before starting her career in politics, she worked as a physician.
She was the leader of a political party called the Christian Democrats from 2004 to 2015. From 2011 to 2015, she served as Finland's Minister of the Interior. This important job involves being in charge of the country's internal security, including the police.
Political Career
Päivi Räsänen became interested in politics in the early 1990s. She has been a member of the Riihimäki City Council since 1993. In 1995, she was elected to the Parliament of Finland, which is the group of people who make laws for the country. She has been a member of Parliament ever since.
In 2004, she became the leader of the Christian Democrats party. After the 2011 elections, her party joined the government. Räsänen was then chosen to be the Minister of the Interior. She served in this role under two Prime Ministers, Jyrki Katainen and Alexander Stubb.
When Finland was deciding whether to join NATO, a major international group for defense, Räsänen shared her thoughts in Parliament. She spoke about the need for courage and humility during important historical moments.
Personal Life
Räsänen is married to a Lutheran pastor. They have five children and ten grandchildren. She lives in the town of Riihimäki, Finland.
